Markku Virtanen

Markku Virtanen is a Professor and Director of M.Sc. Program in Entrepreneurship in Aalto University  School of Economics . He is a docent in the University of Jyväskylä. In 1981 – 1998 he worked in Helsinki School of Economics in different researcher tasks and development activities in Small Business Center. Thereafter Dr. Virtanen was responsible for the Further Education Centre of Mikkeli Polytechnic. In 2001 - 2004 he worked as a Professor and Head Department of Business and Management in the University of Kuopio. Professor Virtanen has been actively involved in the Finnish Venture Cup competition as a main supporter and judge, and currently as a board member of Venture Cup national foundation. He acts in the board of several SMEs. He got Doc. Sc. in Entrepreneurship in 1996 from Helsinki School of Economics. Main emphasis of his research includes growth of SMEs, entrepreneurial finance and venture capital, development of entrepreneurship and business know-how, opportunity development and business planning, regional development and SME policy. He acts as a Country Vice President of European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB).

Professor Virtanen has developed his pedagogical skills through participation in European Entrepreneurship Colloqium in Participant Centered Learning (EECPCL) program in Harvard Business School in July 2005. Membership in this network has been useful in developing curriculum in Entrepreneurship in HSE. In August 2006 and 2008 Dr. Virtanen was responsible for coordination of CEMS Blocked Seminar in Helsinki School of Economics. He is currently a member in CEMS Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship Faculty Group.
